The graphics hardware is Intel 865G. I haven't installed any proprietary drivers. I run the random screen saver with the default set of screen savers. I haven't kept track of which screen saver is running when it hangs...
I had someone restart the machine four days ago. Since then it's been sitting in the logon prompt, and it's still running. When I came into the office this morning, the screen was in power saver mode. This seems consistent with the theory that the culprit may be the screen saver. On the other hand, if the screen saver isn't running, the machine isn't doing much...

I recently installed FC 2 on the above machine, which has a 3G Pentium 4 w/ hyperthreading. This machine seems to hang hard after a day or so of running. It's usually just running the screen saver when it hangs.
A numbre of people have reported problems with OpenGL screensavers. Which screen saver have you chosen?
What graphics hardware does that machine have? If it's Nvidia or ATi, have you put proprietary drivers on?
Try setting "Blank Screen Only" in ScreenSaver Preferences (in Mode).
James.
You might try the rawhide version of X. I had the crashing problem and X just disappeared, leaving the remnants on the display. This was with an 828656 Graphics Controller.
You might try running noof and StarWars for easy crashing for confirmation.
Refer to the bug that I opened and closed for my ordeal and gratified with the rawhide CVS tree correcting the problem.
