I have some experience with such cheep Promise "RAID" cards too. They are good as additional IDE connectors, that's it ;) And yes, Linux RAID (md) works great for me too. Current CPUs have enough power to do the RAID logic by the fly. To the question of the costs, this is relative. I am not sure what kind of server the original poster plans to set up. If it is mainly for home usage or a hobbyist's plan, then of course a 3ware controller or even a SCSI subsystem with expensive SCSI hard disks dig a big whole in your pocket. If speaking about a business system you better count the hours and costs for administration time when the cheep solution takes your attention more than it should. You are quickly in a situation where you pay much more for fixing things which are running poor than if you would have payed a bit more when you decided what to buy to build a server system.
