I have tried running k3b as root and it still doesnt work.... also tried using:
kernel-2.6.6-1.435.2.3
kernel-2.6.7-1.494.2.2
kernel-2.6.8-1.521

All result in k3b hanging and the splash screen just sits at "Scanning
for CD devices..."

Then k3b appears to be dead and cant be killed so I have to restart to
get rid of it....
