Generally speaking, that family of software can be installed from tarballs. Instead of using 'make install' as the final step, use checkinstall, very latest (1.60-beta3) version, to actually do an rpm installation. I've done that here. But if you have yum enabled for automatic updates, add cups*, gimp-print*, and gutenprint* to the exclude list. Otherwise yum has been known to downgrade my cups install to one that totally breaks kde.
