supplimentary information:

disk + bus performance estimate:

    the disk dump writes to

bash-2.05b# /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1004 MB in 2.00 seconds = 500.82 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 124 MB in 3.02 seconds = 41.04 MB/sec

the two disks dump reads from

bash-2.05b# /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1004 MB in 2.00 seconds = 501.32 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 160 MB in 3.03 seconds = 52.88 MB/sec

bash-2.05b# /sbin/hdparm -tT /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1008 MB in 2.01 seconds = 502.57 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 116 MB in 3.04 seconds = 38.10 MB/sec
