There are some programs in Windows for which there seem to be no Linux equivalents--apart from games--such as Dragon Naturally Speaking or OCR programs. Or you may have a favorite Windows application that you do not want to replace by a Linux equivalent--such as a check book program, or you may not want to use Open Office. Impress instead of Powerpoint. For such situations there are programs that allow you to run Windows program in Linux. I have been using Win4Lin for a while now. It will do anything--except dictation and games--and do it seamlessly. The only serious drawback is that it costs $90.00 (you may be able to get a better price on ebay).
