gftp slow with ssh transfers

I've found that gftp transfers using ssh are 10 times slower than using
scp or sftp natively.  Any idea what gftp is doing that slows it down so
much?

I tried -o Compression=no in the "SSH Extra Params" field on the
FTP/Options/SSH tab with no effect.

FC2 with gftp-2.0.17-2 the other end is FC1
