The fetchmail rons as a daemon and should only be run once. From man:
 Only  one  daemon process is permitted per user; in daemon mode, fetch-
       mail makes a per-user lockfile to guarantee this.


You could make it part of your gnome startup programs.
preference/sessions/startup programs.
