"rpm -qif filename" will tell you what RPM the file came from.
For example, on my modified-RH7.3 box, "rpm -qif /etc/lpd.conf" produces:

Version     : 3.6.24                            Vendor: Red Hat, Inc.
Release     : 2                             Build Date: Mon 25 Sep 2000
