Too few information Nina. How do you think anyone can help you? If you
suspect a hardware problem it would be helpful to say which network card
it is (chipset; output of lspci about the NIC), which module you have
loaded for it, whether it has an IRQ (cat /proc/interrupts). I assume
from your reply that ifconfig and route do present proper values. Is you
ethernet cable ok? The proper type (cross connect or non crossed) of
cable?
