he's using fedora core 1, so he should check out
http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc1/
and look at the section about installing software.

if you decide to use yum to install software, i suggest editing your
/etc/yum.conf
file to have the following line:
keepalive=0

i went through months of yum headaches before i found that option.

fedora is cool and this mailing list is cooler...i hope your linux (and
fedora) experience turns out to be a good one.
