What kind of NIC is it? if it's Intel gig card, add the following line
in the /etc/modprobe.conf
options e1000 Duplex=2 Speed=1000

assuming you have the line "alias eth1 e1000" already.

and are you sure it's eth1 not eth0? the error you reported doesn't
look like there is card there.
