This is a mystery to me too, but by trial & error I have learned that
all I really need to do is, as root, create a soft link between
/dev/ttyUSB1 and a /dev/pilot device. Then as soon as I plug in my
PalmOS device (a Treo 600 in my case), ownership changes from root:uucp
to doc:uucp and the permissions change to crw------- (effectively 600).
I use jpilot rather than gnomepilot, but with these settings I can
connect and sync.
