(1) Sluggish gedit and (2) editing a web directory over samba

Hi all,

Two questions from a Linux/networking/webserving newbie.

Question 1

I have Dell computers dual-booting Windows ME and Fedora Core 2. Neither
performs particularly well, but I'm experiencing particular problems with
keyboard responsiveness in gedit. emacs seems fine, as does the testing area
in the Keyboard window from Gnome Preferences.

My three systems are:
(1) Dell Dimension 4100: PIII 731 with 384 Mb RAM, 512 Mb swap partition,
and Nvidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64 graphics card.
(2) Dell Dimension XPS T450: PIII 450 with 314 Mb RAM, 512 Mb swap
partition, and 16 MB 3dfx Voodoo3 3000D AGP graphics card (throws up "cannot
find secondary device" error at boot).
(3) Laptop running Windows XP.

My Linux boxes have been updated to the latest version of everything
(including the kernerls) with yum update. I don't know how to go about
troubleshooting this.

Question 2

My computers swap files by Samba over my intranet, and the second Dell XPS
runs an Apache webserver through my ADSL router. Is there a way to mount
/var/www/html as a Samba share (so that I can edit webpages on the Dell
4100) without crashing the systems?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ben.
