I think moblinux just wants KDE to appear as the default desktop AFTER he logs in. The Desktop Switching Tool or switchdesk allows that, at least on my system. I recently went through a phase where I was switching back and forth for a couple of weeks... But maybe I didn't understand the question.

You can look under KDE preferences for the Desktop Switching Tool. If it's
not there, run 'switchdesk' from a terminal window, or
'\usr\bin\switchdesk'

switchdesk changes only the the desktop, not the X login. The switch from gdm to kdm can only be done with echo "DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE" >> /etc/sysconfig/desktop
