If I were you I'd start using the desktop kernel that was announced on this list.

It is based on 2.6.7 with fedora patches and Con Kolivas patchset for desktop performance.
It works well on my laptop.
Interesting. I wonder if anyone's working on a game server kernel, with the security enhancements combined with the high resolution tick and possibly the other schedulers?
