Hmm, maybe. I am not acquainted with iptables yet, but since I doubted by
programming skills I have reimplemented the apps using Qt's QSocketDevice.
The same behaviour. Which thing made me confident that it is some system
setting which is at fault. Things started to work after I diabled the
firewall completely. Which is a pity though.

I used the KDE applet for setting the system security level, and I tried
only to allow ports like 50001:udp, but it did not make any difference.

So I have no firewall anymore, good or bad as that may be.
