I am not acquainted with iptables yet, but since I doubted by programming skills I have reimplemented the apps using Qt's QSocketDevice. The same behaviour. Which thing made me confident that it is some system setting which is at fault. Things started to work after I diabled the firewall completely. Which is a pity though. I used the KDE applet for setting the system security level, and I tried only to allow ports like 50001:udp, but it did not make any difference. So I have no firewall anymore, good or bad as that may be.
