You know, I have an almost identical problem with RH9 and the official ati drivers from the ati.com webpage. The 'ati' driver works fine, but no hardware acceleration and is slow as all getout... but when I run with the 'fglx' driver I get garbage as well, I've found if I use a short cut to open a window, I can drag that around and it clears up the screen. Unfortunately I still get no hardware acceleration, it locks the system and I'm forced with a reboot.
