My Problem: ftp.dulug.duke.edu is rather "far away" and "slow" - from the network point of view ;-)
Thats why I want to configure/use another mirror for updates.

There are a couple of urls in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date You could try editing them - make a backup of the file first!
