put gateway address and gateway device in /etc/sysconfig/network
like
# cat /etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=phoenix.mullenpr.com
GATEWAY=64.3.90.1
GATEWAYDEV=eth1

I have done that. It cleaned up the route nicely. Also the original problem seems to be fixed now (outbound connections are now from the ip address of the first defined IP address.
