For some noise make sure that the internal gain is moderatly high.

All soundcards have noise such that if you turn the amplifier up
enough it becomes very apparent.  Since the default levels are all set
to zero your amplifyer could be attempting to amplify low level noise.

The better sound cards have lower noise.
