A few things to check: Make sure you don't have num lock or caps lock set. As root change the users password to something very simple at first. If that works then change the password again to something better. Did you edit the passwd or shadow files by hand? Are you using ldap, kerberos, NIS or some other type of authentication? Does the username have any special characters in it? Have you tried creating different users? Did you create a home directory for the user?
