I think I found the explanation, courtesy of Google - apparently there are problems with importing songs when there are WMA files present. It also appears Rhythmbox can't handle WMA files (it plays them but can't catalog them) so it won't be useful for me anyway. Back when I had a portable player with too little memory I converted everything to WMA to save space. Now, converting it all back to MP3 is probably not feasible.I have about 26GB of music that Rhythmbox takes about 10 mins to load. Are you having it search the entire drive or just the specific folder?

I'm trying to get Rhythmbox to load my music library from a FAT32 partition - it's about 6 GB of WMA and MP3 files. It appears to take forever. It's been showing the "Loading songs..." message for the better part of an hour now. The status indicator is moving back and forth so it doesn't appear to be hung.
Should it take this long?
