My new Intel Gbit NIC: a few questions

I've just installed my first Gigabit NIC, an Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop
Adapter card. Now I've got a few questions about this device and about
GBit networking in general.

This 32-bit PCI card is currently running fine at 100Mbps while I await
the delivery of a GBit switch. It is currently running on a RHL v9
system, but I will be upgrading to RHEL soon.

1. Jumbo frames. How does one specify the MTU size as part of the process
of initializing the device? I know that I can specify this using
ifconfig in rc.local, but I'm guessing that there is a "proper" way to
specify this as part of the system config.

2. Which driver? A driver for this card (it uses the Intel 82541GI
controller) is available in the standard Linux kernel as well as in a
binary module from Intel. Which of these 2 drivers is preferred?

3. Finally, are there any kinks or gotchas I should aware of in getting
optimum performance from this device when my GBit switch arrives?

Thanks.
