ifconfig fails on realtek8139

I have a machine with three network cards.

One of them was configured with the address 192.168.2.1 for
a local subnet 192.168.2.0. It is a realtek8139. I have not
had any problems with the interface.

I need to change that IP address, say to 192.168.5.1. I have
tried changing the entries in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
ifcfg-eth2 and then giving the command service network restart.

I have tried doing it directly with ifconfig eth2 add 192.168.5.1... .

I have tried many times, and taken care to see that all input is
correct.

However, nothing changes the IP address of the interface, not even
shutting down after changing the ifcfg-eth2 entries and then rebooting.

Any suggestions?

Thanks...
