Greetings all;

yum seems to have self-destructed with its last update run a couple of
days ago. It was working fine till after that, but now I have at
least 2 programs that don't run/compile. Yum doesn't run, returning
this error:

[root@coyote /]# yum update
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/yum", line 22, in ?
    import yummain
  File "/usr/share/yum/yummain.py", line 31, in ?
    import yumcomps
  File "/usr/share/yum/yumcomps.py", line 4, in ?
    import comps
  File "/usr/share/yum/comps.py", line 5, in ?
    import libxml2
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/libxml2.py", line 1, in ?
    import libxml2mod
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/libxml2mod.so: undefined
symbol: xmlByteConsumed
[root@coyote /]#
---------------
And I will categorically deny doing anything to my python install that
a yum update didn't do. The only housekeeping I've done in the last
month was that I discovered I had 2 identically named qt libraries,
one in the qt3.3 tree, and one in the qt.3.1 tree, so the 3.1 tree
got nuked.

Then, grip-3.0.3 also quit returning this error:
[root@coyote /]# grip
grip: relocation error: /root/kde3.2/lib/libgdk_imlib.so.1: undefined
symbol: png_create_read_struct

So I grabbed grip-3.2.0.tar.gz but it fails to build with this error:
libtool: link: cannot find the library
`/usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.la'
make[2]: *** [grip] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/grip-3.2.0/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/grip-3.2.0'
make: *** [all] Error 2
[root@coyote grip-3.2.0]#

Now for this last error, I do have the file, located
in /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.la:
/root/kde3.2/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib:

[root@coyote grip-3.2.0]# ls -l /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.*
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root    896 Feb  3
23:20 /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.la
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root     25 Feb  3
23:20 /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.so -> libgobject-2.0.so.0.200.3
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root     25 Feb  3
23:20 /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0 ->
libgobject-2.0.so.0.200.3
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 264439 Feb  3
23:20 /root/kde3.2/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0.200.3

my ld.so.conf:
/root/kde3.2/lib
/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/local/lib
/usr/lib/qt2/lib
/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/lib/sane
/usr/lib/lib

and ldconfig has been many times run.

And:
[root@coyote grip-3.2.0]# echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/root/kde3.2/lib:/usr/local/lib:/usr/lib
[root@coyote grip-3.2.0]#

Doesn't that cover all the bases?

What packages do I need to get, and reinstall to restore these missing
libraries? Particularly for the yum or python problem.
