install everything from public mirror (so I did not need to download
several GIGS of files I did no even want to install). Can this be done
with Fedora Core 2, are there directions anywhere?

In the images subdir of the installation tree you will find the file
boot.iso. You get a bootable CD which gives you a choice of several
install methods.

You can also download the first iso and do a minimal install. I would recommend downloading the first disk anyway, since it has the capability of also being used as a rescue CD, and if you start it with
"linux askmethod" at the syslinux prompt, it will allow you to do an NFS, FTP, or HTTP install.
