Problem with a flash memory reader/writer

I just bought a PPA 9-in-1 reader/writer. It's a USB 2.0 device. From reading the howto's it should be pretty much automatically recognized and work, but it doesn't. Following are the lines from the messages file. Running lsusb only shows an entry for my USB mouse. Anyone have a clue about this?
