What kind of "error will pop up"? For testing I just changed the netbios name setting in my servers smb.conf to a name which certainly does not resolv, neither by /etc/hosts nor bind. And no error occurs. Do you maybe mean samba name mapping through /etc/samba/lmhosts file? Of course if you change your hostname setting then of course the /etc/hosts file should reflect the changed mapping too.
