The old configuration should work well enough to give you diagnostic
errors. Perhaps you are chrooted and bind is not seeing the old
files.

Do you have some or all of these installed?

    # rpm -qa | grep bind
    system-config-bind-2.0.2-5
    bind-libs-9.2.3-13
    bind-chroot-9.2.3-13
    bind-devel-9.2.3-13
    bind-utils-9.2.3-13
    bind-9.2.3-13

If you remove bind-chroot do things work differently?
   (rpm -e bind-chroot).
If you install bind-chroot do things work differently?
   (up2date install bind-chroot)

watch /var/log/messages while you restart the service.
  In Screen A: tail -f /var/log/messages | grep named
In Screen B: service name restart
