As I use this exact version on RN9 and it works great. I think the problem has something to do with Samba itself. As I run samba-client-2.2.7a-8.9.0 and it works. If I run it with RHEL3 or FC1 I get the same problems as you do, I can see the shares, but aI can't connect to them. And they seem to run Samba Version 3.xxx.
