Since it is a multi-card reader, it is probably a multi-lun device.  Try adding "options scsi_mod max_luns=5" (replacing 5 with the number of slots) in your /etc/modprobe.conf.  If that works, put an RFE in bugzilla to get your device added to the whitelist.
