Some problem with X is causing it to begin to start up, and then exit. inittab is set to make X restart on exit. So you get this repeated change of video mode. Many multisync monitors are using electromechanical relays to change mode, hence the click, which is normal. At grub time on boot, when you get a little list of kernel versions (or just one maybe if it is a new install), press the down arrow key a few times to make it stop from going on automatically. press the 'a' key when you are on the kernel you want to boot from. Add a '3' to the end of the kernel command line and enter to boot. Now you will come up into init's runlevel 3, which does not try to start X.
