It's a locking problem. Do you have concurrent POP3 connections? You use
the uw-imapd, right?

Check that you did not accidentally change the /tmp folder permissions.
They must look this way:

$ ls -ld /tmp/
drwxrwxrwt  20 root root 8232 24. Jun 19:51 /tmp/

And the mail spool directory this:

$ ls -ld /var/spool/mail/
drwxrwxr-x  3 root mail 4096 24. Jun 18:24 /var/spool/mail/
