Try traceroute ahnews.music.salford.ac.uk >From here on the Demon network, I get 1 * * * 2 thus10-hg3.kingston.broadband.bt.net (217.32.87.202) 94.640 ms 145.362 ms 170.685 ms 3 217.32.87.161 (217.32.87.161) 149.214 ms 120.117 ms 95.296 ms <snip> 13 gw-man.netnw.net.uk (194.66.25.98) 55.775 ms 95.335 ms 76.081 ms 14 hexie.memtech.salford.ac.uk (146.87.55.6) 141.959 ms 173.616 ms 116.503 ms 15 ahnews.music.salford.ac.uk (146.87.55.6) 29.146 ms 63.451 ms 31.836 ms (I'm downloading stuff at the same time, so the packets are somewhat delayed). There are a couple of things to notice here. Note that stage 14 and 15 report the same IP address but with different hostnames. I'm not sure how that's happening. It might point to oddities on the Salford network. The first "hop" reports asterisks. This happens when the router is configured not to respond to traceroute (as is the case here) or if the packets are dropped before reaching their destination. Can you also try traceroute news.bbc.co.uk to see if that is any different? It would be interesting to see if you're just having problems reaching some networks or all of them.
