As far as I can tell, ATI is the only company providing the techincal information about their cards (and even then not for the current R300 based cards) so that 3D open source drivers can be written. If you just throw out your old video cards, you may not care. But if you think you might want to use an old card in a new kernel and take advantage of 3D features, you are going to need an open source driver to exist.
