Michael, Alternatively you could try booting from the RH 8 cdrom into 'linux rescue' mode. Once it has mounted the current file system in /mnt/sysimage you could download local copies of the correct glibc rpms for RH8 and then install them with the... rpm --root /mnt/sysimage -Uvh ...form of the rpm command which would cause rpm to install on the rh8 root partition using its rpm database.
