There are some cards that just "don't work" with FC2 even though they worked in FC1 and RH9, no matter what you do to the mixer. Plenty of reports in bugzilla:

In my case the card was recognized, configured, but no sound ever came out.

The way I got around it for myself is I installed a different sound card and disabled the on-board sound. Very annoying but it was even more annoying to not have sound.
