/usr/bin/vmware is a shell script:

[john@starfleet john]$ file /usr/bin/vmware
/usr/bin/vmware: Bourne shell script text executable

It appears to point to this ELF file:

[john@starfleet john]$ file /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.0.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
