maintenance mode is manual
e2fsck /dev/hda1 
e2fsck /dev/hda2 
etc. you are expected to know which partitions you are using, swap isn't
a partition that has a file system per se.
if you are at all unclear, answer yes at startup to have it check/repair
all known filesystems

typically, /boot is the first partition and it mounts before all the
others i.e. /dev/hda1  -  skip that for now.

file system repair tools do not solve hardware problem. There are
probably others but it's always been good enough for me
