OK, I tried this today.

Firstly, FC2 runs so slowly under VMWare, that it is difficult to tell if
a process has hung or is just working very slowly.

The process of installing vmware tools has been running here now for 20
minutes, with zero feedback or log entries, so I have no idea what is
happening.

I did find a couple of useful links on the subject:

http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=4952&tstart=30
http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3097

Note the section which deals with the X server's configuration.

I'm going to play around with this myself for a while, and come back with
the results.
