Is this on Fedora Core 2? Did this scanner work in linux before?
My HP scanner is automatically detected and setup. It is a Scanjet 2100C. The scanner does not work initially in FC2 but worked in prior FC1.
To get it to work in FC2, the scanner has to either be turned off and on, after login or you have to unplug and replug the USB connector to the scanner.
You might check bugzilla.redhat.com to see if there are any hints for the model scanner that you are trying to setup. I know a "works for me" would be great without additional steps needed. But a "works for me, if I do these awkward steps" is not that bad.
