Just to clear a few things up: I have never used dos/windows partition utils. But I have used DD a lot, and did use it for a previous FC2Test1 install. With the attempted FC2 install I don't think DD would run before the install hit the partition corrcuption error.
I have also noticed the disk with my original FC1 install has this problem too.
Lesson learned: I'll use fdisk from now on! And I'll be spending some time moving data and repartitioning both disks soon. :-(
