It's possible that you can disable the s.m.a.r.t. test..... this only effects the test of your mainboard!!!! I had a similar problem while updating from Redhat 8.0, suddenly i got s.m.a.r.t warnings from the bios after examining it turned out that the errors only occured during installation/upgrade of Fedora Core 2 I dissabled the test and all errormessages (as designed) dissapeared After further installation and booting i got by smartctl -a /dev/hda the following output: After command completion occurred, registers were: ER ST SC SN CL CH DH -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 40 51 20 b8 06 20 e0 Commands leading to the command that caused the error were: CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Timestamp Command/Feature_Name -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --------- -------------------- c8 00 80 b8 06 20 e0 08 1439168.944 READ DMA c8 00 10 80 07 20 e0 08 1439168.752 READ DMA c8 00 08 b0 06 20 e0 08 1439168.752 READ DMA c8 00 68 30 06 20 e0 08 1439168.752 READ DMA c8 00 50 d8 05 20 e0 08 1439168.752 READ DMA etc etc etc I once had a MAXTOR hardisk with smarterrors, after running the utility "powermax" these errors were gone. and i never had any problems after this incident. Western Digital's tool is called "lifeguard" , but i dont have any experience with Western Digital If you examine the RMA procedure of samsung, there wil be a link for a test tool (they all have) DONT FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR DISK, the testtools MAY destroy all your data.... I still dont knowing wether the installation of Fedora Caused this problem ( I just upgraded my existing OS, without (or at least not knowing) upgrading something in the partition table) or this was caused by the load of the installation allthought this disk is just a year old and the load during installation will not be much greater as during "normal" use
