Even if I put -geometry 1024x768 in my xstartup file.
any ideaa of where is should be looking?

In the ~user/.vnc/xstartup file I use:
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
This seems to do the job for me. I suspect it may work for kde as well depending on which window manager you select for the user.
