I'm coming in on the middle of this but having said that... You can use tar to go to multiple floppies. I have done it several times but not within the last 3 years. I don't have any floppies or I'd test it right now. Having used VMS years ago myself ( before it was Open) and worked for DEC for 5 years, the gentleman raises valid points. However, the Linux world does provide equivalent functionality to the OpenVMS functions in this regard. Unix/Linux allows tar archives to span multiple volumes as long as the device is removable. I mean Tape ARchive wouldn't have been much use back in 1984 if it couldn't have spanned tapes on my trusty microVax. See http://www.aplawrence.com/Basics/floppy.html Hope this helps, Mike
