Been there, done that!

As root, run ulimit -l unlimited (check the archives from this weekend
or Thursday or Friday last week).  Then install the kernel again and see
if that works.

Thanks for the help, here is another way to do it (possibly over the top):

I rebooted to 2.6.6-1.383 in single user mode and it installed smoothly. I wonder if it's a problem with 422 or a problem with 414?
