I don't have this problem > on my debian boxes (I'm not using nvidia drivers/hardware on those boxes > either though) With the timer loop problem, you can ssh into the machine (if you have a dual proc or time to wait) and strace the X process. With the hang the machine problem, you cannot ping or do anything but powercycle the box.
