Over the weekend I figured out that the packages may not be the issue.

It is very strange, this problem. The sound only works sometimes on my
system. I have not figured out the pattern. Here is what I do know:

* When the sound does not work at all, I have a mixer from a USB sound
device in the mixer panel. I think it is for a USB camera that I never
use. The only other USB device installed is a Palm m505 cradle.

* Usually, if I reboot the system (when the sound is not working) The
sound will start working. At this point I have a "Symtel OSS Mixer" (or
something like that, the computer's at home) and a mixer tab for my
Audigy card. Both mixer control the sound. I am guessing the OSS mixer
is for legacy apps?

* Many times when the sound starts working (on the first reboot) there
is a terrible hum in the system. The hum is louder than that other
sounds. At this point if I reboot again the hum usually goes away.
Rebooting may be a coincidence. I think I bumped the cables on my
sub-woofer and the I gut the hum for a second and then it went away. I
was very tired and busy doing something else at the time so I am not
sure exactly what happened.

When I get a chance I will try unplugging the USB camera, it also has a
microphone in it I think, and see if the problem with my sound card
changes.
