You can only add those MECHs which appear running "saslauthd -v". Whether then SASL uses PLAIN, LOGIN or an MD5 method is a total different thing. Put shadow in /etc/sysconfig/saslauth - which is btw. the default setting - and you are able to use PLAIN with your client.
